    Hello Everyone!
Finally managed to get logged in. Noticed the wedding announcement on the site blog. Yes, all planned and scheduled. Lindsey has managed to find the most expensive of everything - I am sure girls do that at school when we boys are playing football or something. Anyhoo......does anyone know anything about aerial archaeology?
Reason I ask is I have a friend who has spent nearly £10,000 buying a really fancy unmanned aerial vehicle (helicopter) and is trying to get into doing aerial archaeology. All the usual benefits but nowhere near as expensive as planes etc.
    Any thoughts / pointers?
    Phil

I am not sure what you mean by aerial archaeology and I know very little about the subject. However I have seen some LIDAR surveys and I am very impressed by the results. I feel that this should be used much more but apparently it is too expensive for general archaeological useas a very large number of plots have to be made. Therefore I wonder if your friend's helicopter could be used for LIDAR surveys. Before you ask I do not know where to obtain the kit or how much it costs.

Thanks for the feedback Dave. I think it will be a while before he could afford to invest in that sort of technology. He uses the term aerial archaeology to describe advantages of gaining a good aerial view of the ground. The high viewpoint permits a better appreciation of fine details and their relationships within the wider site context. Potential areas of archaeological interest can be detected from features emphasised by a number of factors which become more prevalent when viewed from the air. As you say, barrier has been price. His unmanned helo is much less than booking a manned plane / helo, but slightly more than a canera on a pole.
